We do have other LMS options, but I think learning a new system for a week or two only to switch back to Canvas (which most of us already know and love) just seems like creating confusion. Week #1

For this assignment, you will need the notes pages (below) to fill out while you watch the videos. Since we go over the answers to the notes pages in the videos, you do NOT need to turn those in to me. I suggest printing them out and actually writing on them (I know…I’m old school). But, of course, you are welcome to take notes digitally instead (that is up to you).

For your homework this week, you will need to log into IXL and complete the assignment listed below. If this is your first time with HPA and how we use IXL, the number in parentheses after the assignment is the points goal. For example, let’s say you have 4 sections assigned, and the points goal is 350. That means, that once you’ve hit 350 points (in any combination), you’ve earned 100%. (Yay you!) However, IF there is any “wiggle room,” anything above the points goal is bonus points. So, if you earn 400 points, your grade would be 114% (to calculate this divide the points you earned by the points goal…400/350=1.14, then move the decimal two places to the right). I know it seems a bit confusing at first, but give yourself about two weeks for the “HPA Learning Curve” then you’ll be rocking “all the things.”

Week #3-4

Welcome back, fellow reader and writers! I hope you had a fantastic weekend and are ready to jump into another exciting English lesson. This time, you will have TWO WEEKS to complete the assignment. Why? Well, even in our in-person classes, we usually spend two weeks on pronouns, breaking up the IXL work into two “halves” more or less. So, I decided to just power through and record all the things for pronouns and post both videos today, so that you could spend the next two weeks on this assignment.

A few tips, though…first, DON’T PROCRASTINATE. It is up to you how you break up this work since you’ve got two weeks worth of videos and practice available to you, but do NOT wait until only a day or two before it is due to start on the IXL. My next tip? Don’t cheat on the practice pages. In the videos we go over every answer, but because of that, you do not need to turn in the practice page for a grade. So, when it says to pause the video and try some practice problems on your own, you really should do just that.

Bonus Point Assignment

I know you guys are still working on the two-week Pronouns lesson, but I wanted to give you an opportunity for bonus points. 🙂 I have an easy video review for you and some practice pages. Biology I

Welcome to your very first choice board! If you’ve never done a choice board, I think you’re in for a treat. I love this homework method, because it lets you “choose your own adventure” when it comes to how you will earn points on your homework. (If you’ve done a choice board at HPA before, look out…they just got a “glow up.”)

The goal for your science choice boards is 500 points, but since our science modules are so long, we spend two weeks on each one. So, manage your time wisely (I like to say shoot for 250 points each week). Also, you may earn up to 100 bonus points on every choice board, but the limit is strictly 100.

With our online classes, we will be going over our “Guided Notes” together (unless it is a reading comprehension exercise). And while we will be covering this material in our instructional time, whether you choose to fill out the notes for any/all of the guided notes is up to you. The notes, like everything else on the choice board, are simply points up for grabs for you to choose from.

If you were with HPA for in-person classes, you may be familiar with our ISN system (Interactive Student Notebooks). With our online campus, you will no longer be required to maintain an ISN, even though some of the “guided notes” will still be in ISN format (all the cutting, gluing, and “flappy” vibes). So, if you like the ISN system and want to keep using that for your notes this year, feel free. However, not all of the notes will be “ISN-sized.” So, I would encourage you to simply keep a binder and glue your “ISN-style notes” onto a blank piece of hole-punched paper that you can keep in your binder (that’s what I’m going to do). However, it’s up to you. 🙂

Lastly, I want to tell you about one SUPER cool feature here in Canvas, and that is the ability to “annotate” an attachment. I definitely encourage you to play around with this feature, which will let you write directly on the PDF of a choice board instead of printing out every single one. However, once again, the choice is up to you. Either way, I just need to see proof of the work you submit with your choice board here on Canvas.

So, here is your very first choice board for the new school year (cue the drumroll). Start by reading the module and exploring the options for points located in your textbook. Then, I’ll be posting more “Guided Notes” videos as we move through the module. 🙂

for you for Experiment #1.2 “Introduction to the Microscope” in which you look at a review on how to use the microscope, the letter “e,” and cheek cells. I’d like for EVERYONE to watch the playlist (yes, the first two videos are geared to a bit of a younger audience). However, if you’d like the points on the choice board for completing the lab, you will need to fill out the Microscope Observation Page (below). The “specimen” for the top three circles is the letter “e.” You will need to draw it at the three different magnifications: 40x, 100x, and 400x. There is no stain for the letter “e.” You should write your observations as well. Then, you will repeat the process for the “cheek cells” specimen (just write “special stain” for his favorite stain he references). In order to earn the full credit for any microscope lab, your drawings must be DETAILED, LABELED, and COLORFUL (where applicable). You will not have labels/colors for the letter “e.” As always, this is just a choice on the choice board. 🙂

Spanish I

Week #1

For this assignment, you will need the practice pages (below) to fill out while you watch the videos. Since we go over the answers to the practice pages in the videos, you do NOT need to turn those in to me. I suggest printing them out and actually writing on them (I know…I’m old school). But, of course, you are welcome to take notes digitally instead (that is up to you).

For your homework this week, you will need to log into IXL and complete the assignment listed below. If this is your first time with HPA and how we use IXL, the number in parentheses after the assignment is the points goal. For example, this week you have 4 sections assigned, and the points goal is 350. That means, that once you’ve hit 350 points (in any combination), you’ve earned 100%. (Yay you!) However, anything above the points goal is bonus points. So, if you earn 400 points (the max for this week’s assignment), your grade would be 114% (to calculate this divide the points you earned by the points goal…400/350=1.14, then move the decimal two places to the right). I know it seems a bit confusing at first, but give yourself about two weeks for the “HPA Learning Curve” then you’ll be rocking “all the things.”

Who’s ready for a field trip? Well, not exactly. This week you are looking at the many Spanish-speaking countries, their capitals, and their flags. We will be labeling maps, matching countries with their capitals, and following directions in Spanish to color the flags of these Spanish-speaking countries. So, grab your notes pages, some crayons or colored pencils, and maybe some sunscreen just in case. LOL 🙂

Please note that you will be turning in your answers to the 48 task card questions and the flags coloring pages, so even though the pages for these are posted here, you will also see a separate assignment posted for each of these so that you can submit your work (pics, annotations, or however you chose to complete the assignments). So, please only submit your IXL points to this assignment.

Spanish Projects

Read ALL the directions and watch the video before starting these projects.

In addition to your IXL, you have two Spanish projects to do this week – a country report and a weather report. Everything you need to know about these reports is in the video below, so PLEASE watch the video. I won’t be answering questions that are covered in the video, so please make sure to watch the entire video. Lastly, NO REPEATS on cities chosen for the weather project or countries chosen for the countries profile. It is first come, first served. So, once you know which city you want for the weather project and which country you want for the country profile, you must post what you chose on the “Spanish Projects Bulletin Board.” Make sure to check there first before you start your projects, because any repeated cities/countries will not count for any points.

Week #4

This week’s IXL is all about listening. Since this is the first time you are working with listening comprehension for this class, block out plenty of time to do your homework (don’t wait until the very last minute – it’s hard to “get in the zone” with these activities when you’re stressed out). We talked about many of these phrases already, but I’m including a quick review video below. I’m also including a fun video all about Mexican food to give you another taste of the language. 🙂

Don’t forget that you also have two Spanish projects to do this week as well. They don’t take a lot of time, but you certainly don’t want to procrastinate on these either. (They are listed separately.)
