We do have other LMS options, but I think learning a new system for a week or two only to switch back to Canvas (which most of us already know and love) just seems like creating confusion. So, welcome to our great big backup plan. 🙂

For this assignment, you will need the notes pages (below) to fill out while you watch the videos. Since we go over the answers to the notes pages in the videos, you do NOT need to turn those in to me. I suggest printing them out and actually writing on them (I know…I’m old school). But, of course, you are welcome to take notes digitally instead (that is up to you).
For your homework this week, you will need to log into IXL and complete the assignment listed below. If this is your first time with HPA and how we use IXL, the number in parentheses after the assignment is the points goal. For example, let’s say you have 4 sections assigned, and the points goal is 350. That means, that once you’ve hit 350 points (in any combination), you’ve earned 100%. (Yay you!) However, IF there is any “wiggle room,” anything above the points goal is bonus points. So, if you earn 400 points, your grade would be 114% (to calculate this divide the points you earned by the points goal…400/350=1.14, then move the decimal two places to the right). I know it seems a bit confusing at first, but give yourself about two weeks for the “HPA Learning Curve” then you’ll be rocking “all the things.”

Welcome to your very first choice board! If you’ve never done a choice board, I think you’re in for a treat. I love this homework method, because it lets you “choose your own adventure” when it comes to how you will earn points on your homework. (If you’ve done a choice board at HPA before, look out…they just got a “glow up.”)
The goal for your science choice boards is 500 points, but since our science modules are so long, we spend two weeks on each one. So, manage your time wisely (I like to say shoot for 250 points each week). Also, you may earn up to 100 bonus points on every choice board, but the limit is strictly 100.
With our online classes, we will be going over our “Guided Notes” together (unless it is a reading comprehension exercise). And while we will be covering this material in our instructional time, whether you choose to fill out the notes for any/all of the guided notes is up to you. The notes, like everything else on the choice board, are simply points up for grabs for you to choose from.
If you were with HPA for in-person classes, you may be familiar with our ISN system (Interactive Student Notebooks). With our online campus, you will no longer be required to maintain an ISN, even though some of the “guided notes” will still be in ISN format (all the cutting, gluing, and “flappy” vibes). So, if you like the ISN system and want to keep using that for your notes this year, feel free. However, not all of the notes will be “ISN-sized.” So, I would encourage you to simply keep a binder and glue your “ISN-style notes” onto a blank piece of hole-punched paper that you can keep in your binder (that’s what I’m going to do). However, it’s up to you. 🙂
Lastly, I want to tell you about one SUPER cool feature here in Canvas, and that is the ability to “annotate” an attachment. I definitely encourage you to play around with this feature, which will let you write directly on the PDF of a choice board instead of printing out every single one. However, once again, the choice is up to you. Either way, I just need to see proof of the work you submit with your choice board here on Canvas.
So, here is your very first choice board for the new school year (cue the drumroll). Start by reading the module and exploring the options for points located in your textbook. Then, I’ll be posting more “Guided Notes” videos as we move through the module. 🙂

*I also want to make a quick note, here. I pull resources from a variety of places, and while I am very selective about which resources we use, there will be occasional references to “evolution” in a couple of the resources throughout the year. As a Christian program, you can imagine where we fall on issues such as these, and we will actually spend a whole module (later in the book) taking a closer look at the “Creation vs. Evolution” debate. However, I always like to include a warning about this at the beginning of each year (feel free to do what I do and simply put quotation marks around the word).
Here are the first half of your “Guided Notes” to get you started. Remember, you have TWO WEEKS on each choice board, so we will be going over even more next week. 🙂

With our online classes, you will be joining “Mama T” in the online classroom for your lessons each module. The audio isn’t as great in these videos, but Mama T is AMAZING, so it’s more than worth it. Plus, some of her outtakes are hilarious (watch out for what she says when we get to the muscular system – Lord, have mercy!) As an option for points on your choice board, you can fill out Mama T’s lecture notes as you watch the video. You don’t have to, of course, because this (like most everything else on the choice board) is an option for you to earn points. Which activities you choose are totally up to you (except for reading the module – that one is mandatory.)

- If you want to do the note-taking strategies for this module (Roman numeral outlines), make sure to watch the videos (below) and shoot for at least ONE PAGE of notes per section. “Skimping” on your notes will mean fewer points on your choice board.
- If you want to do the “coloring pages,” PLEASE note that the page numbers in your textbook correspond to the ACTUAL PAGE NUMBERS in the book and NOT the page numbers you see for printing out the pages. When in doubt, double-check the title at the top of the page to make sure that it matches with the activity referenced in your textbook. Also, since Canvas restricts our storage, I will not be posting the PDF of the coloring book as an attachment to every module’s homework assignment. So, I would encourage you to either save it now or make a mental note to come back to this assignment to grab it later if you decide to try out that option in the future.
